THE PRACTICE

Helland Architecture is a small, multidisciplinary architecture and design studio focused on the exploration and creation of unique spatial environments for residential and commercial clients. Founded by Cam Helland in 2018, the studio is inspired by the collaborative effort and seeks to discover honest, holistic, and responsible design solutions that can be applied to projects of any scale, use, or purpose. Our desire is to create compelling work that is informed by the collective experiences, processes, and unique context inherent to each individual project.

We believe architecture has the capacity to teach - strengthening our relationship with the environment and uncovering qualities of our surroundings that reinforce the spirit of ‘place’. Our work is intrinsically tied to the site - shaped by the physical circumstances, materiality, and natural conditions found there. Through rigorous analysis and intimate detailing, we use these elements, often seen as constraints, as a catalyst for envisioning smart, sustainable, and functional spaces that respond harmoniously with the environment.

Cam Helland was born and raised in the small, mountain ski-town of Crested Butte, Colorado. He earned his professional degree in Architecture from California Polytechnic State University, SLO. While attending Cal Poly, he spent a year abroad studying design and architecture in Copenhagen, at the Denmark International School. Cam spent his summers in the mountains, working for his father, Michael Helland, Architect, designing and overseeing several custom, residential projects. During this time, he also worked in construction, building many of the same houses he designed with his father. This was an invaluable, hands-on experience that continues to influence his design philosophy and thoughtful approach to architecture today.

In addition to running his Architecture practice, Cam has been intimately involved with the furniture design company, Fyrn, since its inception in 2015. He continues to collaborate with the Fyrn team to envision, design, and develop award-winning, modern, residential and commercial furniture from their San Francisco-based fabrication shop - www.fyrn.com.
